Frugal new 1.6-litre diesel engine joins the premium compact cabriolet line-up alongside new quattro versions and wider S tronic availability

Longer spring days have just been complemented by the potential for lengthier spells of top-down driving between fuel stops in the new Audi A3 Cabriolet, which this week adopts a 1.6-litre TDI engine capable of over 72mpg. Drivers who value tenacity in corners and increased capability in adverse weather as highly as economy can also now opt for new quattro all-wheel-drive versions of the 180PS A3 Cabriolet 1.8 TFSI. The additions to the originally three-strong A3 Cabriolet range can be ordered now, as can new S tronic twin-clutch-equipped versions of the 1.4 TFSI 140PS Cylinder-on-Demand and 2.0 TDI 150PS versions. All the new variants will reach their first UK customers in the summer.

Positioned as the efficiency champion in the cabriolet line-up, the particularly frugal 1.6 TDI lowers CO2 emissions to just 104g/km and can achieve up to 72.4mpg according to the combined cycle test. Initially available to order exclusively as a six-speed manual, the A3 Cabriolet 1.6 TDI needs 11.4 seconds to reach 62mph from rest and can continue to a top speed of 124mph.

Peak power from the 110PS four-cylinder unit is available between 3,200-4,000rpm and peak torque matches the similarly efficient 1.4 TFSI with Cylinder on Demand at 250Nm between 1,500-3,000rpm. Customers can choose the all-new A3 Cabriolet 1.6 TDI with SE, Sport or S line specification options, all of which include features such as the MMI Radio with DAB digital reception and powered retractable colour monitor, preparation for SD card-based satellite navigation, air conditioning or climate control, light and rain sensors and an automatic fabric hood that opens and closes in less than 18 seconds.

Sport models also feature the Audi drive select system which fine-tunes driving characteristics, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension and front sports seats, while S line models are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and S line interior and exterior design enhancements. Sport and S line models also feature a fully automatic acoustic fabric hood which is insulated by three layers of fabric to mute road noise even more effectively.

All-weather traction for the open-top compact class
Sun-seekers who also want to enjoy their A3 Cabriolet at its best in less clement weather can also now opt for a 1.8 TFSI petrol model which offers the added reassurance of quattro all-wheel-drive. At the heart of the all-wheel drive system is a hydraulically actuated and electronically controlled multi-plate clutch which can send power from the front to the rear axle in just a few milliseconds. The clutch, which now operates without a pressure reservoir, weighs significantly less than the previous unit.

In the interest of better axle load distribution, it is located at the end of the prop shaft, in front of the rear differential. Inside it is a package of plates which rotate in an oil bath. During normal driving, the clutch sends most of the engine’s power to the front wheels, but if they start to break traction it can transfer torque in varying degrees to the rear axle almost instantaneously by pressing the sets of plates together under control.

Peak torque increases from 250Nm in the front-wheel-drive version to 280Nm in the quattro, which combined with the optimal traction helps to bring about a slight improvement in the sprint time to 62mph from 7.8 to 7.6 seconds. Top speed is 145mph, and combined fuel economy stands at 42.8mpg with emissions of 154g/km.

Greater choice of transmissions
The slick-shifting S tronic transmission is also now more widely available for the A3 Cabriolet, extending its reach to the 1.4 TFSI model with Cylinder on Demand technology and to the 150 PS 2.0 TDI. Carrying a premium of £1,480 over a manual equivalent in each case, S tronic can operate as a conventional automatic, albeit with exceptionally rapid gear shifts, but also allows drivers to shift gear with the central selector lever or with paddles on the steering wheel. When combined with the Audi drive select dynamic driving system (standard on Sport and S line), efficiency mode enables a free-wheeling function to further reduce fuel consumption.

In March, Audi delivered more cars to customers than ever before in a single month, both in the UK and globally: a total of 28,841* cars found homes here, and around 170,450 deliveries were completed worldwide, increases of 13.3 percent and 15.4 percent year-on-year. This result made March the 51st consecutive month with global sales growth for the Vorsprung durch Technik brand. In addition to the UK, China (+36.6%) and Germany (+10.2%) also achieved particularly high growth last month. Cumulatively, Audi sales increased by 11.7 percent in the first quarter to around 412,850 units, marking the first time that the company has exceeded the 400,000 vehicle mark in the first three months of any year.

“In March we achieved a double best figure, completing the most successful first quarter in our company history with the strongest sales month ever,” says Luca de Meo, Member of the Board of Management for Sales at AUDI AG. “With new models like the A3 Saloon the internationalisation of our business is gaining momentum. In the first quarter we achieved substantial growth in all regions around the world and grew more strongly than the market in Europe.”

In March, the Audi convertible range played an important role in the successful start to the spring season: The A5 Cabriolet (+8.3%) and the TT Roadster (+22.6%) achieved a significant global increase year-on-year. In addition, the new A3 Cabriolet arrived at Audi Centres in the first markets. The first examples of the A3 Sportback g-tron also arrived in March, paving the way for CO2-neutral mobility with Audi e-gas. For the entire A3 family, sales figures climbed by 52.5 percent to around 28,750 cars last month. The Q7 (+39%) and the A8 (+49%) achieved the strongest growth among the brand’s full-size models. In Europe, Audi concluded March with an increase of 7.2 percent across all models to around 88,750 cars sold. In addition to renewed high growth in Germany (+10.2% to 27,226 cars), the two largest European export markets in particular provided a further boost: 28,841 units were delivered in the United Kingdom.

Aerodynamic performance is critical for reducing fuel consumption and raising efficiency. Audi prototypes spend over 1,000 hours in a wind tunnel with improvements being made so drag can be reduced. Less air resistance also means improved handling, lower CO2 emissions and even improved safety. Improvements such as door mirrors which are aerodynamically shaped so rain is directed away from the side windows for better all-round visibility is another notable product of this extensive development process.

The Audi Q5 has a drag co-efficient of just 0.32.

New Saloon, Avant and Coupe variants employ latest Audi ultra efficiency technology to boost economy and trim CO2 to as little as 109g/km

At the pinnacle in terms of efficiency, the range of Audi ultra models which launched in the UK with the A6 last month is quickly expanding to include A4 Saloon and Avant and A5 Coupe variants. With CO2 outputs of as little as 109g/km the three new A4 and A5 TDI ultra models undercut the already impressively low emissions figures achieved by the familiar TDIe versions in each range. They are available to order now priced from £28,320 OTR and will reach their first UK customers in late April.

Although it shares its 163PS output with the more powerful of the two TDIe engines, which until now was reserved for the A5 Coupé, the unit powering the latest ultra models is a completely new development engineered for even leaner burning with no impact on performance. It works with a highly efficient Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system that removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust and ensures that the new models meet the stringent new Euro 6 emission standards.

Peak power arrives 1,200rpm earlier at 3,000rpm in the new ultra engine, and maximum torque increases from 380Nm to 400Nm and is available over a wider spread from 1,750rpm to 2,750rpm. Acceleration from rest to 62mph in the exclusively six-speed manual-equipped A5 TDI ultra is very slightly improved at 8.3 seconds (previously 8.4), and top speed holds firm at 140mph.

The same performance data also applies to the new A4 2.0 TDI ultra, and both also share identical, and exceptional, economy and emissions figures, with up to 56.5mpg possible according to the combined cycle test, delivered with CO2 emissions of just 109g/km. The A4 Avant is only just behind, with a 0-62mph time of 8.6 seconds, a top speed of 134mph, the potential for up to 55.4mpg and CO2 output of 114g/km.

BIK and VED benefits

The outstanding emissions performance delivered by the three new models has a bearing on their CO2-related Vehicle Excise Duty categorisation, which in the A4 Saloon and A5 Coupe is band B (A5 Coupe TDIe previously band C), and in the A4 Avant is band C. Ultra technology also facilitates exceptionally competitive running costs for business users, with benefit-in-kind liabilities of 16 per cent, 17 per cent and 16 per cent for the A4, A4 Avant and A5 Coupe respectively. If the A5 Coupé 2.0 TDI ultra SE is compared with the outgoing A5 Coupe 2.0 TDIe 163PS SE, the annual liability for a 40 per cent tax payer falls from £2,236 to £1,988.

Ultra badging at the rear discreetly marks out these extraordinarily focused models, which in all other respects closely resemble SE versions of the A4 and A5. A5 ultra Coupe models are available exclusively in SE form, while A4 and A4 Avant versions can also be upgraded to SE Technik specification.

A4 SE equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, an Audi Concert CD audio system incorporating DAB digital radio and linked to a 6.5-inch colour monitor, light and rain sensors, rear parking sensors and electronic climate control. A5 SE models also feature Milano leather upholstery.

SE Technik specification for the A4 adds Milano leather upholstery, along with additional features such as hard disk-based MMI Navigation plus, Audi Music Interface (AMI) iPod connection and the Audi Parking System Plus with front and rear sensors.

All A4 and A5 ultra models are equipped as standard with lowered sports suspension to reduce drag and maximise economy, and for the same reason the 18-inch alloy wheels normally included as part of the SE Technik upgrade for A4 models are omitted.

During this year ultra specification will become available for more models in the Audi range, starting with the five-door A5 Sportback.
